Trauma therapy doesn't heal by "processing."
It heals when the brain finally registers a new prediction.
2025 neuroscience: memories aren't updated by retelling - they're updated when the environment contradicts the expected threat.
In other words:
Therapy works when safety surprises the system.
So when the client:
• breaks eye contact
• braces for anger
• apologizes for existing
• waits for your disapproval
They're not being dramatic.
They're bracing for the prediction that has always come true.
And when you don't match the feared outcome,
the brain pauses,
hesitates,
and updates.
Change doesn't begin in insight.
It begins in quiet prediction error
delivered gently enough for the system to tolerate.
